David Moran is a cellist and artistic researcher specialising in contemporary performance practice. He has appeared in performances across Australia and internationally in solo, chamber, orchestral, and multidisciplinary contexts. International performance highlights include appearances at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse (2025), Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (2022-23) and the ULYSSES Ensemble (2023). Notable recent performances at home include as soloist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in Luke Harrald’s, Vanishing Point (2025), with Ensemble Musikfabrik in Adelaide (2025), WOMADelaide Festival with Maryam Rahmani (2026) and John Cage’s Variations with Decibel Ensemble (2024). David is an ensemble member of Moirai and Wattleseed Ensemble and a casual cellist with the Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. Performance accolades include nominations for the APRA Amcos Art Music Awards (2023), Freedman Fellowship (2022), and he was awarded Chamber Music Adelaide’s ‘Young Artist of the Year’ for 2020. David is enrolled in a PhD at Monash University under the supervision of Professor Cat Hope. His research focuses on performance practice for contemporary experimental music and modern theorisations of virtuosity. Research output includes his masters thesis: ‘The Modified Cello and Virtuosity’ (2022), and a book chapter, ‘The Interrogation of Instrumental Technology in Liza Lim’s Invisibility’ (2024) in Contemporary Musical Virtuosities published by Routledge. David was awarded a PhD Fellow position for 2026 at Monash University’s Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance leading to academic and instrumental teaching. He completed a Master of Arts (Music) degree at Monash University in 2022, and is also a graduate of the Australian National Academy of Music and the Elder Conservatorium of Music, Adelaide University.
